So here we are in the middle of a thoroughly unspectacular year for WCW. How did this show go?
Match 1: Brian Knobbs vs Hak (aka The Sandman)
A typical Sandman match. Garbage cans, Kendo sticks, Chairs, Ladders...etc. Hak wins, Knobbs and some friends beat on Hak after the match. Just kinda a typical match of this nature which I can't give any more than 1 star.
Match 2: Van Hammer vs Mikey Whipwreck
Just kinda a squash match. Van Hammer had long been a jobber after a push in the early 90's in WCW, but is apparently getting at least a modest push here, and is pretty dominant over Mikey Whipwreck. Obviously it's no Match of the Year. Just a squash match, but for what it is, it's well done. I'd give it 2 stars, because to be honest...I kinda miss good old fashioned squash matches of this sort.
Match 3: Buff Bagwell vs Disco Inferno
I don't like either of these guys so it's not surprise I really don't like this match. They give us what they got which is a lot of posing, and goofy shit. Buff wins. 1 star.
Match 4: Curt Hennig & Bobby Duncum Jr. vs Rey Mysterio & Konnan
So we got Curt and Bobby coming out to the ring with Curt singing "Rap is Crap". This is during his feud with Master P and his "No Limit Soldiers" lol. if it sounds stupid....trust me, it is. He had ran across Master P at the beginning of the night before any of the matches started, asked him for an Autograph, and then crumpled it up and threw it away prompting some "Beef" as Master P put it lol. Mysterio and Konnan come out and say they're representing their boy Master P. and after a fairly mediocre 1 star match Mysterio gets the pin on Bobby Duncum Jr. with the help of Swole. One of Master P's dudes. It's fucking stupid, and lame. Oh...and I FUCKING HATE KONNAN. Lawdy, lawdy and bawdy bawdy or whatever the fuck he says, fuck I hate this guy lol. Same damn thing every time...but that's a different gripe.
Match 5: Ernest Miller vs Horace Hogan
Horace Hogan gives a really stupid ass promo coming out to the ring here, precedes to work a shitty match where Ernest Miller has to carry him basically, Ernest gets some loaded shoes or something from Sonny Onoo, kicks Horace. 1-2-3. Yet another lackluster, completely forgettable match. 1 star.
Match 6: Roddy Piper vs Ric Flair
Apparently these 2 icons were fighting over who was going to be the President of the company or some shit I gather. This match though makes no fucking sense whatsoever. Roddy and Ric are doing their thing, having a pretty good match as you'd expect. Buff Bagwell somewhere in there comes down to help Roddy Piper after Ric Flair just hit him with the dreaded foreign object. This leads to Ric Flair winning by DQ. Roddy Piper comes and looks like he's gonna pat Buff on the back, and then starts punching him, and then Ric and Arn Anderson hold Buff down while Roddy Piper straps him with a belt. Makes no sense whatsoever. I can get him being mad at Buff for costing him the match, but why would Arn and Ric help the guy they were just fighting strap Buff?....I don't know. It's fucking stupid. I can't give it more than 1 star. I know it's unbelievable, but I just can't. Not when it's done like this.
Match 7: Sting vs Rick Steiner (TV Champion)
One of the better matches on the card for a good long stretch. Rick and Sting are able to work a good, heart hitting style...for a while. And then they fight to the back, and Scott Steiner sics Dogs on Sting, and the camera crew cuts away from a "vicious Dog attack" lol. I'm not making this up lol. So yeah, this is yet another match with 2 big name guys, 2 solid talents. Completely wasted with absolute nonsense. 1 star
Match 8: Diamond Dallas Page & Kanyon vs Chris Benoit & Perry Saturn (Tag Team Champions)
This is probably the best match on the card in terms of work rate. DDP had charisma, but Kanyon, Benoit and Saturn were the workhorses of this match. Particularly Benoit and Kanyon. It's still not anything particularly spectacular, but at least there's a clear winner, and not anything too overly hokey going on here so it's good enough for at least 2 stars, making it one of the standouts of the card.
Match 9: Randy Savage vs Kevin Nash
So apparently we'd had a buildup on Nitro and Thunder in recent weeks of Nash dumping shit onto Savage via a Sewage Truck and then a bucket of shit apparently, and then Savage had Ladies lure Nash into a Limo where he lead him into a car smashing into it potential seriously injuring Nash....and how are they gonna settle this? In the ring of course! They have a match. Savage is accompanied by 3 ladies at this time. Miss Madness, Gorgeous George and Madusa. He's very stiff in his movement at this time, much more top heavy, and trying his best to get by with what he can, but it's just not that good at this point. There's a lot of interference from the ladies in this match just to give it some sorta action to make up for all that Savage and Nash couldn't do. The hilarious thing here is that after all 3 of Savage's Lady henchmen interfere repeatedly in front of the Referees eyes. Sid comes in and kicks Kevin Nash, and that's it ring the bell DQ....lol. So apparently 3 people interfering is a mild inconvenience, but a 4th person? Alright you gotta draw the line somewhere, that's a DQ lol.
Just ridiculous....oh and Nash retains the title via DQ. So there ya go. There's your 1 star Main Event. to a 1 star Show.
Best match on the card?
I'm sorry to say, but I believe the best match on the card is probably Van Hammer vs Mikey Whipwreck lol. I mean it wasn't spectacular obviously but at least it was a goddamn Wrestling match with some logic to it. The only one on the card really. The Tag Team match is a close 2nd, and if you wanted to choose that as the best match on the card I could see that. Anything else though....I mean, if you ain't seen it, other than Morbid Curiosity of "How bad did it get" there's nothing to revisit here, and I probably won't anytime in the next several years if ever.
