The full story of the Snyder Cut is a long one. The movie itself is one thing, but this story is about far more than just a movie. Hope you're ready for a bit of a read:
So following the negative reactions of BvS WB execs pushed Zack to make the movie lighter and brought in Joss Whedon to re-write certain scenes. WB president also gave a strict order that the movie could not be over 2 hours (which is a big problem as not only did they want to catch up to the MCU they wanted to do it without the setup of solo movies which is one of the things that crippled the theatrical version as with only a 2 hour limit you couldn't tell the story of the JL & go into the characters backstories as there wasn't enough time) so Zack was to direct the scenes that Whedon re-wrote & that's where our story takes a very tragic turn.
Zack's daughter Autumn committed suicide. Zack continued to work on the movie for another 2 months to distract himself from the tragedy before he could take no more & stepped down (Not sure if anyone was following the turmoil during this period, but there were actually people that said he deserved to have that happen and were glad his daughter killed herself. What the fuck is wrong with people?) Whedon would take full control over the production producing a movie which has been described as a Frankenstein of a film: that is part his, part Zack's and other parts hobbled together. Zack's wife Deborah & Christopher Nolan told Zack to never watch the Whedon film as it would break his heart. The Whedon movie is considered non-canon as Patty Jenkins & James Wan directors of Wonder Woman & Aquaman respectively both worked with Snyder to keep continuity.
The cast & crew encouraged Zack to release his version of the movie & it was Christopher Nolan that said that Snyder should complete his movie. Fan support grew as ReleasetheSnyderCut regularly began trending on Twitter and for comic-cons people would even rent billboards in support of Zack Snyder and wanting to see his trilogy be completed. When the news broke that the movie would indeed see a release the cast would reunite for additional shoots in support of Zack. Also the end of the story is how it began with Zack dedicating the movie to the memory of his daughter Autumn.

In closing I'm going to wrap it up with this: whether you love the movie, hate the movie, are indifferent etc. This was never really about whether the movie was good or not (Which thankfully it is good if a bit lengthy, but 4 hours was what he needed to tell the story in full & yes it does end on a cliffhanger that may or may not ever see a conclusion. The overall story of the first movie was complete, but the cliffhanger was to tie directly into parts II & III, maybe Zack might get the chance to make them too).
This was about the fans wanting something, wanting it so bad for so long that finally the studio had to listen to them. They didn't listen to the critics, or the 'Karens' or the SJWs or the assholes that scream on social media, but never actually watched the movies in the first place, they listened to the fans. This whole ReleasetheSnyderCut movement was about sending Hollywood a message: that if you listen to the fans & give them what they want, those fans will show up and good things can happen. And regardless how you feel about the movie that's a message we all should support. So even if you had no desire to see this movie I'm going to recommend that you do see it, to support that message if nothing else. Because if the Snyder Cut is a success then maybe Hollywood will get the picture and start listening to the fans about other stuff as well: Star Wars, Star Trek, who knows.
Change has to start somewhere it might as well be here.
