Macho Man: The Randy Savage Story
Disc 1: Documentary
I liked this, and found out a few things I never knew about Macho Man. Usually these ain't worth rewatching, but they're alright for a gander if you like the wrestler that is the subject of discussion.
Disc 2: Matches
Match 1: Randy Savage vs Ricky Steamboat - Intercontinental Championship
This is the match when Savage injures Steamboat severely with the axe handle on the guard rail, and then the ring bell across the throat. A big part in leading their rivalry down the road to their epic WM 3 match.
Match 2: Randy Savage vs Bruno Sammartino - Intercontinental Championship (Lumberjack Match)
For some reason it doesn't show the exact dates on this DVD set, but you can guess around when they would've been if you're familiar with Randy's career. Bruno looks good here, but Savage winds up winning by DQ. Shows how respected Sammartino was in the business that they still have him getting the rub here pretty much in front of the Boston Garden crowd.
Match 3: Randy Savage vs Ricky Steamboat - Intercontinental Championship
A real solid match as you would always expect from these two. Savage gets the win this time. He hooks the tights, and Bobby Heenan says "He's a Champion because when it had to be done he went and did it" lol. Steamboat is still hot after him after the match, and has to be restrained by the ref. Savage is bleeding badly.
Match 4: Randy Savage vs Harley Race
A battle of 2 ring Legends! Harley Race is of course in the latter years of his career, but he's not quite the dinosaur Sammartino was on this DVD set, and I still enjoy this match. Savage of course gets the win as he should've at this stage in their careers. It's a little annoying the way the WWF never acknowledged guys accomplishments back then like they say "This Harley Race has beaten some tough customers, but if he won this I'd be impressed even more so"...at this time he had already done all of his biggest career defining stuff so them acting as if he had anything to prove as ludicrous, but that's WWF/E for you.
Match 5: Randy Savage & Strike Force (Tito Santana and Rick Martel) vs Honky Tonk Man and The Hart Foundation
This is an unusual cage match. A 6 man cage match where the way for a team to win was for all 3 men on a team to exit the cage. They didn't have to exit all at the same time, and of course the heels have a 2 on 1 advantage at one point in the match. But the team of Savage, Martel and Santana come out on top.
Match 6: Randy Savage vs Ted Dibease - WWF Championship
One of his title defenses against the man he beat in the WM IV Tournament Final to win the title. Savage is in a neck brace, but he comes out on fire. Dibease of course takes advantage of the injury throughout the match as much as he can, but he just can't stop the Macho Man! Savage ultimately winds up winning by DQ after interference from Virgil. It's a good matchup up until then though. Not the best finish.
Match 7: Randy Savage vs Bad News Brown - WWF Championship (Harlem Street Fight)
Savage takes Brown up on his challenge to meet him in HIS kinda match. In these days it was highly unusual to see the Championship defended in a match like this. Bad News jumps him before he can get in the ring, and has the upper hand throughout most of the early portion of the match works over Savage with a chair a few times. Bad News even has the match won at some point, but the referee is down and misses the pin. Another referee comes in just in time to count the 1-2-3 after Savage puts a backslide on Brown. The melee continues well after the bout with Bad News attacking referees, and lots of wrestlers having to come out of the back to break up the wrestlers.
Match 8: Randy Savage vs Hulk Hogan - WWF Championship
A rematch of WrestleMania 5. One of many I'm sure. This is the beginning of Savage's partnership with Sherri, and Sherri is definitely a lot of more of an assistant at Ringside than Elizabeth ever was as this match shows. Savage gets the upper hand several times in the match as a result of Sherri's interference or distraction. Savage wins by countout, and parades around the ring with the title belt for a while before Hogan comes in, and rams Sherri's head into Savage's. Savage and Sherri were a real class duo here. I enjoyed this one a lot.
