Before They Were Famous
Match 1: The Headbangers vs Chris Michaels & Flash Flanagan - An early look at The Headbangers who already had the same gimmick they'd have in the WWF, and here you see that even in the early going in their career they had excellent tag team maneuevers. Chairshot will appreciate this comment, Chaz is wearing a Slayer shirt along with his skirt that they had with their WWF gimmick...I'm pretty sure Slayer fans would totally kick your ass for dressing like that lol. Anyway I digress. Match is pretty fun.
Match 2: "Hollywood" Bob Holly vs Paul Miller - An early look at Bob Holly better known to most of you as Hardcore Holly. He was solid here in the early days and finished his matches with a devastating top ropes moves. I enjoy these early matches of his. He finishes this one with a flying drop kick from the top rope.
Match 3: Jerry Lynn vs Killer Kyle - Pre-ECW fame Jerry Lynn, he's on the receiving end of an ass kicking here by Killer Kyle. I like watching Killer Kyle in this persona so this is fun.
Match 4: Dixie Dy-No-Mite vs The Dark Secret - A battle of Masked men. Under the masks are 2 brothers, Scott Armstrong and Brian Armstrong (Brian later went on to greater fame as Road Dogg in the New Age Outlaws). This is one of Brian's early matches. Scott's gimmick was more over in SMW so he gets the W here. Brian was just getting a little in-ring experience here, coming from a wrestling family he took to it pretty quickly.
Match 5: Crash the Terminator vs Miguel Perez - Crash the Terminator aka Hugh Morrus is Bill Demont. Perez wrestled in the WWF in the Los Boriquas faction. This is a pretty impressive showing with some very athletic moves coming from these big men. A run-in ends the match.
Match 6: Tim Horner & Brian Lee vs Kevin Sullivan & The Nightstalker - The Nightstalker aka Adam Bomb in WWF, Wrath and Brian Clark in WCW. A pretty nice mix of names here. Tim Horner is a decent in-ring worker, but for the love of God don't let him get on the mic lol. After an interference from The Tazmaniac (more on that in a minute) backfires on them. The team of Horner and Lee win.
Match 7: The Tazmaniac vs Robert Gibson - Tazmaniac is Taz in an early gimmick, it's a pretty stupid gimmick and I'm glad he dropped it lol. He's working with Robert Gibson of the Rock 'n Roll Express. Nothing special here.
A Promo from Tammy Fitch (Tammy Lynn Sytch aka Sunny)
Match 8: The Heavenly Bodies vs The Bruise Brothers - The Bruise Brothers (aka The Harris Bros.) This is great. These two teams were managed by Jim Cornette. He managed the Tag Team Champions and his other team wanted a crack at the titles. He wasn't letting them get their match and they signed for it without his permission. Cornette winds up getting involved with powder in the eyes...cracking the guy with the tennis racket. Classic Cornette. The two teams wind up battling out of the arena and they eventually fight their way back. A match never winds up taking place, just a wild brawl.
Match 9: Brian Lee vs Chris Kanyon - An early match in the career of Kanyon...who better than Kanyon? At this point, most people lol. Lee beats the crap out of Kanyon in this one.
Match 10: Chris Candido vs Louie Spicolli - Spicolli and Candido two wrestlers who met tragic ends well before their time. This match sees the two of them giving good examples of their in-ring work and what they were capable of. Candido gets the win here.
Match 11: The Thrillseekers vs The Infernos - The Thrillseekers are Chris Jericho and Lance Storm. The Infernos are Fire and Brimstone (a masked tag team). Like a reincarnation of the Rockers, a classic babyface prototype tag team. Jericho and Storm get the win. This was their debut and I believe one of the earliest matches Jericho or Storm ever had in the U.S.
Match 12: The Rock 'n Roll Express vs The Gangstas - The Gangstas are New Jack and Mustafa. This is a wild match and The Gangstas cut an extremely controversial promo after the match. This is one of the last big programs in Smoky Mountain Wrestling...I wonder why? Lol. This is one of the most memorable moments on the DVD.
Match 13: D Lo Brown vs Steve Armstrong - An early match in D Lo Brown's career.
Match 14: Cactus Jack vs Boo Bradley - Boo Bradley aka Balls Mahoney in one of his early matches. Jack kicks his ass here as you'd think. Definitely not as cool a gimmick as Balls Mahoney.
Match 15: The Rock 'n Roll Express vs Eddie Gilbert & UnaBom - UnaBom is one of the earliest gimmicks for Glen Jacobs (Kane). UnaBom towers over everybody else in this match, but he's still very green in his career at this point. This is UnaBom's 1st match on Smoky Mountain television (meaning it was probably his first televised match), and it was Eddie Gilbert's last match in the U.S. Mainland. After this he accepted a booking position in Puerto Rico and passed away shortly after. Rock 'n Roll get the win with an over the top rope DQ.
Match 16: Ricky Morton vs Al Snow - Al Snow replaced Eddie Gilbert as UnaBom's tag team partner and took his spot in the feud with the Rock 'n Roll Express. This is one of Snow's first breaks on television, but he had been a veteran for quite a number of years already at this time. Snow was the best kept secret in Wrestling at this time and had been recommended highly for this spot by a few people. Morton gets the win, after the match UnaBom gets the ring and beats the crap out of everybody.
And that's Wrestling Gold: Before They Were Famous
Best Match: My favorite match and segment here would probably be The Rock 'n Roll Express vs The Gangstas...it was a highly controversial segment that wound up getting the promotion in some hot water I believe, but it's entertaining.
