Pride 4
October 11, 1998
All fights on this card have Two 10 minute rounds. There are no judges, if fights go the distance they're automatic draws.
Fight 1: Igor Vovchanchyn vs Gary Goodridge
They're kicking this one off with a bang! The always entertaining Gary Goodridge and the little fireball Igor Vovchanchyn who would also come to be a very familiar face to Pride FC fans.
Vovchanchyn comes out early and lands a low kick to Gary, Gary clinches him and takes him down. There's blood on the side of Igor's face early, I'm not sure from what. Gary drops back in an attempt at a submission...doesn't turn out to be a wise move as Igor takes the opportunity to mount him. Gary powers up and gets Igor onto his back again. Gary reigns down some hard right hands on Igor, but Igor is quickly able to kick him away and get up. They stay in a clinch while standing and wind up falling back to the ground with Gary on top. Gary asks the referee "Can I kick face?" at one point. They get back to their feet, Igor lands a few solid punches and the referee steps in and stops it. Seems like a premature stoppage as much control as Gary had been in up to that point. But Igor wins via TKO on punches.
TKO 1 Igor Vovchanchyn
Fight 2: Akira Shoji vs Wallid Ismail
Akira Shoji like Gary is making his 4th consecutive appearance in Pride FC. Wallid begins the fight in an aggressive pose wanting to get the fight to the ground, Shoji lands a good right hand and Wallid shoots in. After a lengthy period of trying to figure out to get an effective position on Shoji, Wallid gets through with a few punches. He finally ends up getting the mount. Shoji finally manages to fight his way out of the situation and get back to his feet where he lands a few punches during a wild exchange as Wallid struggles to get him back down to the ground. He eventually succeeds. From the side mount Wallid lands some punches on Shoji before switching to the full mount again. He's not able to get much done, they wind up standing again, and then back to the ground. A few weak punches from Wallid, but little else. Round comes to an end, you'd have to give Ismail the edge.
Round 2, Wallid comes out looking very gassed, Shoji takes advantage landing several clean punches on Wallid Ismail and before long Shoji has himself a TKO victory on punches!
TKO in the 2nd round for Akira Shoji.
Fight 3: Daijiro Matsui vs Sanae Kikuta
Kikuta comes out and ends up in a clinch with Matsui, he then takes him to the ground with a leg sweep. Kikuta just like the fight with Renzo Gracie, is a slow paced fighter, he lands a few punches but nothing particularly effective. They wind up standing. Matsui tries to reverse the situation, but winds up on his back again. Kikuta eventually gets reversed and Matsui winds up on top, stands, and then gets taken down again. Matsui finally gets a little distance and kicks Kikuta away, he then rolls Kikuta and has him in the side mount. They finally wind up standing. Matsui lands a few leg kicks and punches. Round comes to an end.
Round 2, back to a grappling match. This is the hugging and laying stuff that annoys me about MMA sometimes. Weak punches, no real submission attempts...just a dull fight. Kikuta attempts a front choke at one point, looks to have Matsui in some brief trouble but Matsui gets loose. Kikuta continues just kinda laying on Matsui, Matsui gets frustrated...he eventually reverses him, and lands some weak hammer fist shots to the side. Nothing too meaningful. Kikuda gets the advantage back...dull fight. "Kikuda is just not an exciting fighter" the commentators say. The round comes to an end.
There's a 3rd round...I'm bored at this point so I'm just gonna skip most of it. The Fight ends.
It's an automatic draw...I guess that's fair. Fight sucked
Fight 4: Kazushi Sakuraba vs Allan Goes
Sakuraba...now we have some exciting grappling! Sakuraba throws a front kick to Goes' face early and then takes him down. Eventually Saku gets back to his feet and starts kicking the legs of Goes. He does a cartwheel move and lands a punch on Goes, Goes lands a kick from the ground...Saku gets back to kicking his legs. Goes continues landing effective strikes from the bottom. He eventually gets Saku down and gets his back and almost locks in a rear naked choke, but Sakuraba escapes. Sakuraba continues to have problems throughout the round.
Round 2, Goes continues to control the action. Some punches on the ground bloody Sakuraba's nose. Allan goes for the choke again, but can't get it. Sakuraba just can't figure Goes out. Goes continues giving him a lot of problems. It's probably some of the most effective work I've ever seen from a fighter on his back. Round comes to an end with Goes continuing to enjoy the advantage.
Round 3, Goes continues to give Sakuraba all kinds of issues. Sakuraba occasionally is able to land some leg kicks, but other than that Goes shuts him out on the ground and continues to land effective strikes from his back. He lashes out with kicks at Sakuraba's knees. Round comes to an end like this.
It's an automatic draw.
Unofficial Winner: Allan Goes (He got the better of all 3 rounds I thought)
