I'm doing this review because in shopping around for some good old school wrestling DVD's I found there's not nearly enough info out there on some of this stuff so I figured I'd help out at least the few dudes that check out this forum.
This set is a bargain at only $14.99 on Amazon. "Wrestling Gold: Special Edition" it's called, and it has all of the first 5 volumes of the Wrestling Gold series. This is what you can expect from this one.
First off, all matches have the original sound/commentary, but there is an alternate commentary track provided by Jim Cornette and Dave Meltzer that looks back on the matches and the wrestlers with a lot of unique insight into the era and the wrestlers involved.
Vol. 1: Busted Open
Sherri Martel vs Judy Martin - Nothing too special here, but it's cool to get a look at Sherri before her manager days
.
Shawn Michaels vs Ken Johnson - Michaels in his rookie year. You can already see the budding talent
Gino Hernandez and Tully Blanchard (The Dynamic Duo) vs The Grapplers - Southwest Tag Team Championship I don't feel like I'm spoiling the surprise considering it's the very next match on the set, but there's a little misunderstanding here between Blanchard and Hernandez, and the way it's handled and done at the end of this match is one of the best ways I've ever seen them bust up a tag team, and it really sets up the next match wonderfully.
Gino Hernandez vs Tully Blanchard - Very good match off of one of the biggest Southwest Championship Wrestling cards.
Adrian Adonis vs Bob Orton Jr. - The conclusion of an 8 man tournament, this match was for the short lived SCW World Championship. The title only was around for a few months and then Southwest Championship Wrestling lost their TV deal with USA, and the promotion slowly went under.
Bruiser Brody vs Abdullah The Butcher - The action is joined here mid-match. This one is just a wild brawl that goes on and on for a while and finally just ends. Nobody wins or loses, it just breaks down into a chaotic brawl.
Larry Zbysko vs Scott Casey - Decent match. Nothing too special.
Jerry Lawler vs Bob Sweetan - A battle between two masters of the pile driver. Lawler taunts the crowd heavily in this match. It's pretty fun.
Tully & Gino (The Dynamic Duo) vs Terry Funk and Ivan Putski - Decent match. An odd pairing to see Putski and Funk teaming together.
Bruiser Brody vs Nick Bockwinkel - AWA World Heavyweight Championship, this match is joined midway through as well. Not the greatest, but it's cool to see these two well known figures in wrestling squaring off. Brody is more subdued in this match than usual.
That's Vol. 1...and we still got 4 volumes to go!
BEST MATCH: A bit hard to narrow it down on this volume, but I think my favorite thing on here is the Tully Blanchard & Gino Hernandez vs The Grapplers match. The betrayal from Blanchard at the end of the match leading to Hernandez's babyface turn is so well done I'd like to see the angle repeated at some point because it seems like one that could definitely work again.
