Normally, week seven of an episodic broadcast would be during the fourth set of TV tapings. In this case, weeks six and seven were taped back-to-back due to them being "Queens of the Ring" Tournament highlight episodes. The episode opened to our commentary team in the commentary booth of an empty WRAL studios.
Madusa Miceli: "Welcome to the hottest sixty minutes of wrestling on television, Show Time Femme Fatales! I'm your hostess, Madusa Miceli. With me, as always, is the lovely Latina Melissa Santos and the equally beautiful Noel Harlow! Last week, we presented highlights of the huge 'Queens of the Ring' Tournament first night. We showed clips of sixteen tremendous matches. This week, we will show you night two, which will include the second round, quarterfinals, semis, and championship matches!"
Melissa Santos: "That's right, Madusa! So many 'Match of the Year' candidates came out of this one event. It was just amazing to be a part of.!"
Noel Harlow: "I've said it before and I'll say it again. If I would not have been working the event, I would have sat in line and bought a ticket. It was WELL worth the price of admission! The crowd was on fire and so were the ladies!"
Miceli: "That's right! Without further adieu, let's take you to the second round!"
Match Seventeen ~ Io & Mio Shirai vs. "Divas of Destruction"--Celeste & Seleziya
This match was marred with controversy, as "DoD" dominated the bulk of the contest. Approximately eight minutes in, Aja and Awesome Kong appeared and created a diversion. Aja got the referee's attention, while Awesome collaborated with her "Joshi Mafia" sisterhood to triple-team Seleziya, all after dumping Celeste to the outside. An assisted "Implant Buster," followed by a "Moonsault" from Io spelled the doom of "DoD."
Winners = Io & Mio Shirai by pinfall in 8:39
After the match, Ladies Division Deputy Commissioner Fuka Kakimoto mandated that, while the referee's decision would stand for that result, no members of "Joshi Mafia" could be present at ringside for any more of that faction's matches in the tournament. Should any one member of "JM" make any appearance at all during a fellow member's match, the team wrestling would be promptly disqualified without prejudice.
Match Eighteen ~ "Fifutishēdo"--Michiko Omukai & Remei Asuka vs. "Team Bestie"--Trish Stratus & Amy Dumas
Remei Asuka petitioned her "Madame" to be included in this match. She was granted that request, which may have been the undoing of "Madame" Omukai's quest to win this tournament. Asuka fell victim to the "Stratusphere/Litasault" combo for the pin, much to the pro-legends crowd's delight.
Winners = "Team Bestie" by pinfall in 6:29
After the match, "Dominatrix" Nishio whipped Asuka all the way back to the dressing room.
Match Nineteen ~ "Belleza Escondido"--Lluvia & Sexy Lady vs. "Kyūtīpai"--Cherry & Misaki Ohata
It's always fun to watch the dance that is Lucha Libre vs. Puroresu. Aerial expertise vs. strong style technique. Both were displayed in this match-up. Lluvia and Sexy Lady had the upper hand initially with several "Armdrag" variations that kept their Japanese counterparts on their heels. Cherry and Ohata eventually settled down and ground the match out, with Ohata finally nailing the "Hanamaru Dokkan" on Lady for the victory.
Winners = "Kyūtīpai" by pinfall in 7:34
Match Twenty ~ "Crush Gals"--Chigusa Nagayo & Lioness Asuka vs. "Double Inoue"--Takako & Kyoko Inoue
This was a dream match that was at least twenty years overdue. If this would have taken place in 1990 or 1995, the stadium would have been full on that match alone. As it was, both teams still worked a fantastic match, considering that the youngest competitor is 45 (Takako). "Crush Gals," though slower than in their heyday, make up for it with supremem wrestling IQ and acumen. The Inoues are still explosive. It just comes more in does. Nonetheless, the back-and-forth struggle still drew the fans in. Alas, the "Cinderella" story was over for the oldest team in the tourney, as the Inoues hit the "Takako's Night Night/Victoria Driver" combo on Asuka for the pin.
Winners = "Double Inoue" by pinfall in 8:00
Both teams embraced to a standing ovation. The "Crush Gals" raised "Double Inoue's" hands before the four left together.
Match Twenty-one ~ "Queen Kongs"--Aja & Awesome Kong vs. "The Dollhouse"--Eve Torres & Taryn Terrell
Torres and Terrell attempted to pass the match off to two of their stable mates, but were thwarted by Ladies Division Commissioner Yuzuki Aikawa, who stated that substitutions were only allowed in the case of injury.
The Kongs decimated Terrell and kicked Torres to the outside. A "Double Spinning Backfist" ended this one quickly.
Winners = "Queen Kongs" by pinfall in :42.
Match Twenty-two ~ "Joshi no Densetsu"--Manami Toyota & Toshiyo Yamada vs. "Jumping Bomb Angels"--Itsuki Yamazaki & Noriyo Tateno
This was the second of the legends dream matches on the card and it lived up to the billing as well. As was stated before, if this match had taken place twenty years prior, it would have filled the stadium on its own merit. There is no question that it was the match of the round. Chants of "This is awesome!," "You still got it!," and "This is wrestling!" rang out. It seemed, at moments, that it was twenty years ago. "JBA" looked great out there and the Toyota/Yamada combination has not missed a beat. Highspot after highspot was hit, as all four ladies flew across the ring. It was an air traffic controller's nightmare, but the fans marveled at the athletic prowess they were treated to. The end came in a fantastic sequence. The "Angels" nailed their signature "Double Dropkick" on Yamada, only to stand up and turn around into a "Missile Dropkick" by Toyota that took them both down. Toyota then landed another "Missile Dropkick" to Toteno's back that sent her careening directly into Yamada's "Screw Kick." Yamada secured the pin while Toyota held Yamazaki at bay.
Winners = "Joshi no Densetsu" by pinfall in 9:24
Another standing ovation was given and another embrace of respect was shared by the teams in center ring. What a match!
Match Twenty-three ~ "LayCool"--Michelle McCool & Layla El vs. "Mala Chicas Culo"--Sarah Stock & Ayako Hamada
"LayCool" came out to prove a point and they did. They earned the chant of "You still got it!" from the Charlotte crowd. Stock and Hamada controlled the tempo of the match, and looked to have it well in hand. Some trickeration from the "flawless" team sealed the deal. The referee had been knocked down after a collision with Hamada. Stock had McCool screaming in pain with "La Tapatía." Layla snuck in and hit the "Bombshell," which enabled McCool to execute the "Faithbreaker" for the upset.
Winners = "LayCool" by pinfall in 7:47
Match Twenty-four ~ "British Bombshells"--Hannah & Holly Blossom vs. "Muscle Venus"--Tsukasa Fujimoto & Hikaru Shida
The Blossom twins were on their game. It looked, momentarily, like the British team would pull out the upset, but Fujimoto willed her team to victory. If Shida was the first-round MVP, Fujimoto was the top dog in round two. Tsukasa nailed the "Venus Shoot" on Hannah, as Shida dropped Holly with the "Coconut Flash." Tsukasa then locked in the "Goku-raku Gatame" for the tapout.
Winners = "Muscle Venus" by submission in 6:58
Match Twenty-five ~ Io & Mio Shirai vs. "Team Bestie"--Trish Stratus & Amy Dumas
The quarterfinals began with a bang. We thought, for a few minutes, that the de facto number one seed (this was a random draw tournament) would be eliminated before the finals. Trish and Amy were clearly in the zone and were having so much fun together. The Shirais held on for dear life until they could sneak out the victory. Dumas scaled the ropes for the "Litasault," but Io pushed her feet off the turnbuckle and she came crashing down on her head. Io then cinched in the "Io de Janeiro" and Dumas had no choice but to tap out.
Winners = Io & Mio Shirai by submission in 8:14
"Team Bestie" were sportswomen throughout and attempted a handshake, but the Shirai sisters laughed them off to a chorus of boos. "Team Bestie" received a standing ovation for their progress to the quarterfinal round.
Match Twenty-six ~ "Kyūtīpai"--Masaki Ohata & Cherry vs. "Double Inoue"--Takako & Kyoko Inoue
Ohata and Cherry were somewhat out of sync in this match. Could it be that they were a bit awestruck by the legendary Inoues? It seemed that way from the beginning. Either way, their loss of composure was the Inoues gain. They made fairly quick work of their opponents.
Winners = "Double Inoue" by pinfall in 3:49
Match Twenty-seven ~ "Queen Kongs"--Aja & Awesome Kong vs. "Joshi no Densetsu"--Manami Toyota & Toshiyo Yamada
This match represented the number one blood feud in NWA: Show Time and the match played out like it. The Kongs are fierce competitors in their own right. Even they were taken aback by the aggression of Toyota and Yamada. This battle had a surprising end. The Kongs leveled Yamada with a "Double Spinning Backfist." Toyota seemed to go berserk. She went to wailing on both Kongs and had them wobbly. She shoved the referee three times and refused to break, prompting the disqualification.
Winners = "Queen Kongs" by disqualification in 7:22
Match Twenty-eight ~ "LayCool"--Michelle McCool & Layla El vs. "Muscle Venus"--Tsukasa Fujimoto & Hikaru Shida
"LayCool" scratched, clawed, and choked their way through this match, relying on all the devious action that made the pair famous. It was not be though, and the final legends team fell by the wayside. Shida and Fujimoto were just too good.
Winners = "Muscle Venus" by pinfall in 7:59
"LayCool" received a standing ovation for their efforts in the tournament.
Match Twenty-nine ~ Io & Mio Shirai vs. "Double Inoue"--Takako & Kyoko Inoue
The first of our semi-final matches was a dandy! The sisters Shirai are a well-oiled machine, but the Inoue sisters are as well and are arguably one of the top three joshi teams in history. This match was nip-and-tuck all the way, as you would expect for this stage of the tournament. Ultimately, a shortcut proved to be the difference. The referee was tangled in between Mio and Kyoko. Takako had Io trapped in the "Dragon Sleeper." Io was frantically tapping out, but the referee was detained. Mio broke from the madness long enough to blast Takako with her "Egukeri," which laid Takako out. The referee, who was getting Kyoko out of the ring, was none the wiser. Io made the limp cover for the pinfall before Kyoko could break things up. The Shirais were on to the finale.
Winners = Io & Mio Shirai by pinfall in 8:45
Match Thirty ~ "Queen Kongs"--Aja & Awesome Kong vs. "Muscle Venus"--Tsukasa Fujimoto & Hikaru Shida
The possibility of an all "Joshi Mafia" tournament final gave this match even more intrigue. "Muscle Venus" wanted to prove that there was room at the top for them as well. The Kongs dominated the action, as they typically do. In the end, "Muscle Venus" simply wanted it more. After missing a "Double Spinning Backfist" on Shida that caught Awesome and sent her reeling, Aja got hit with a "Flying Bodypress" by Fujimoto that got the pinfall. Aja kicked out a fraction of a second after the three-count.
Winners = "Muscle Venus" by pinfall in 9:02
So, the finals were set with the two best teams in the company, appropriately enough.
Match Thirty-one ~ Tournament Championship ~ "Io & Mio Shirai vs. "Muscle Venus"--Tsukasa Fujimoto & Hikaru Shida
Two days of waiting came down to this: one fall with a thirty-minute time limit. Winners take all. $100,000 and a huge platinum trophy. The effort from both teams to get to the finals was amazing. The effort they put in for this match was astounding. They used nearly all of the thirty minutes allotted to finish it. Io hit her gorgeous "Moonsault," but Shida unbelievably kicked out. Fujimoto used Manami Toyota's "Japanese Ocean Cyclone Suplex," but Mio got her shoulder up. Shida leveled Io with "Tamashii no Three Count" and Mio broke up the pin. Io got Tsukasa in the "Arcoiris de Io," but Hikaru broke that one up. The finish came out of nowhere. Mio had Fujimoto on her shoulders for the "Violet Flash." As Io was about to connect for the "Tornado DDT" portion of the maneuver, she was cut off by Shida and Tsukasa turned her predicament into a "Victory Roll" for pin out of nowhere.
Winners and "Queens of the Ring" = "Muscle Venus" by pinfall in 28:33
The crowd exploded as Shida and Fujimoto leapt into each others' arms. Commissioner Aikawa and Deputy Commissioner Kukimoto brought the trophy and check into the ring, with Emcees Jim Ross and Valerie Wyndham en tow.
