I was just pondering on this, and I think for smart wrestling fans like us. You know, the ones who've seen so much of it for so long they can't help, but watch it through critics eyes. Why do we keep watching for all these years? What keeps us hanging on when we mostly know what's likely gonna come next when we watch?
I think there's 3 key things that keeps the long time fan hanging on. Now you can debate which one is more important, but it's these 3 things I think that keeps us coming back. I was really thinking about this hard as I'm sitting here listening to the 6:05 Super Podcast, and wondering what it is that is so endlessly fascinating to me about all this kinda stuff.
Here's the things I think most of us are ultimately looking for in wrestling.
When it either.
A: Gets it exactly right. To the point that it leaves you thinking. "I couldn't have booked it better myself. That was fucking great"...even though you were thinking along those lines it either met or exceeded your expectations. These are always fun moments.
B: When it gets it right in a way you weren't even expecting or considering. Every now and again Wrestling can throw us a curveball that we didn't know we wanted until we got it. Austin 3:16 anyone? These are REALLY the things that keep us coming back I think. The hey it's wrestling, who knows what the fuck COULD happen. Yeah most of the time, nothing memorable is gonna happen, but sometimes, something is...and it's gonna be awesome, and you'll be glad you were watching.
C: The Nostalgia factor. Podcasts en masse are banking on this one right now. All the wrestlers, and performers from years gone by that everyone remembers fondly, they discuss them endlessly or even still pay to see them wrestle in many cases. WWE has been banking on this a little too heavily this decade, but there's obviously money in this element of it all as we all love the stuff we saw as a kid the most I'm sure. Try as we might, it'll never be the same as it was when we were kids.
I think really it's these 3 things more than anything else that keep us hanging on. These are the things that make us enjoy wrestling, and not just watch it ya know.
