It was only a matter of time before Disney started fucking up the franchise. Hopefully this is just a bump in the road as their previous Star Wars movies have been solid enough.
I've never watched Star Wars since Disney bought it. I never had any doubt they'd ruin what good there was about it.
The George Lucas Star Wars films are all that exist to me, and even those I'm pretty well burnt out on to be honest. Not so much the movies themselves, but they get referenced and mocked in Comedy shows and shit so much you just get sick of hearing about 'em lol.
When the news came out that Disney had bought Star Wars from Lucas like a lot of people I was really excited. Like what does this mean? Are they going to continue the saga? Could we see Luke again in a new movie? This is the best thing ever. I like so many other people bought into the dog & pony show. I thought they were going to do it right. Kathleen Kennedy promised George Lucas the most important thing was honoring these characters and it's going to be awesome. Then came the Force Awakens which I enjoyed for the most part, there was a few issues, Han dying the way he did felt wrong to me, (but at the same time it was fate Harrison Ford always wanted for the character) Finn was kind of annoying, we never get to see Han, Luke & Leia together like we wanted, but overall I was on board.
I was so sure. I told myself they've got a plan, they know where they're going, they've got explanations for all this stuff, Rey's going to be someone important, it's going to make sense how she's great at everything without ever trying, they'll explain everything it will all make sense. Then it ended with Luke standing on that cliff & for 2 years I could not wait for Episode VIII.
So I'm in line with everyone else for Episode VIII, I'm finally going to get to see one of my original heroes Luke Skywalker back on the big screen like I always wanted. And then I saw what they did. The Last Jedi. I've never felt more angry, frustrated and depressed walking out of a movie theater. It took me a good few weeks to process just how that movie got everything completely, utterly, horribly wrong. Just how sloppy the story-telling was, all the massive plot holes, things that made no sense, so many missed opportunities they threw away in favor of doing all this other crap which was just terrible. The baffling disrespect shown not just to the legacy characters, but the story, to the original movies and even to the first movie in this trilogy that led into Episode VIII.
All these story points that Force Awakens set up was completely thrown out. Admiral Ackbar basically dies off-screen so unceremoniously that I didn't even realize he was dead until later on and then the Carrie Poppins thing happens and then this garbage new character Holdo gets the heroic death that should've been Ackbar's. All the nonsense on Canto Bight, all the characters are getting butchered, no one's acting like they're supposed to act. It's like what the hell is going on? This movie's a complete fucking mess!
And then what they did to Luke. Completely and forever ruining Luke as a character, turning him into this broken cowardly hermit who completely failed to bring back the Jedi Order, who tried to murder his own nephew in his sleep. If you know anything about Luke as a character you know how horrifically wrong that is. Luke, the real Luke would never have acted the way that he did in that movie. That is not who Luke Skywalker is & I honestly would have been ok with Luke dying in that movie if they would have at least honored his damn character, treated it with respect and finished his journey in a way that felt right, but there was nothing right about this. The Last Jedi bastardized Luke Skywalker, twisted him into something unrecognizable and then killed him off in bullshit fashion just to twist the knife a little bit more.
The Last Jedi is a perversion of Star Wars and everything it represents and as time went it on it just got more frustrating. New details came out and we started to learn just how incompetent Kathleen Kennedy was at managing this franchise. How she wanted tons of identity politics in the movies and how they never really had a plan for the Disney Trilogy. Or they did have a plan, it might not have been a good plan, but there was a plan.
Until Rian Johnson came along and threw the plan away so he could just do whatever the hell he wanted & Kathleen Kennedy let him do it that was the worst part of all. Because Rian Johnson didn't care & he's proved that since then by lying to the fans, antagonizing them on social media, not taking any criticism about The Last Jedi seriously, just blowing it all off with that same shit-eating grin that he's always got. Rian Johnson is a bully. Rian Johnson is a troll. Rian Johnson is a piece of shit. He never cared about Star Wars. He didn't care about honoring the legacy characters, honoring the original movies, he didn't even care about honoring the previous film in this trilogy or properly setting up the next one. He only cared about one thing with Episode VIII and that's being a bull in the china shop that walks in flips over every table, smashes everything in sight & walks away laughing. That's all Rian Johnson wanted to do & Kathleen Kennedy let him do it. She could've taken one look at his script for Episode VIII and told him to hit the bricks, but she approved it, she let him film it & now it's out there for the world & the fact that it even exists makes me sick.
To this day I feel sick over that & I'm not surprised George Lucas felt betrayed over what they did, I felt betrayed, most people felt this way. Even the actors, members of the cast have come out to criticize The Last Jedi. Daisey Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Issac, Anthony Daniels saying they didn't agree with the choices Rian Johnson made, Mark Hamill's never been shy about how that movie treated Luke, even JJ Abrams has said The Last Jedi wasn't the movie that fans wanted. So they know what a mistake it was, they can't outright say that, but they know. The only one that doesn't seem to know that is the person who mattered the most in all this and that's Kathleen Kennedy.
Now we're just days before Rise of Skywalker opens and let's take what's been said by the leaks out of the equation for a minute, even if we didn't know that & I still couldn't see how this movie could be any good. No possible way that the saga could end that would make things right after Rian Johnson took Episode VIII & wiped his ass with it. Forget fixing The Last Jedi this thing probably won't even be able to stand on it's own merits. I hate that Palpatine is alive, it just cheapens the ending of Return of the Jedi so much and Vader's redemption and sacrifice means nothing now, but they needed a big bad after Rian Johnson went and killed Snoke so here we are.
