Tonight (Feb. 20), Tye Dillinger took to Twitter to announce that he has requested his release from the WWE.
Before rumors begin to spread, let me set things straight ahead of time:
This evening, I requested my release from WWE. In the past 5 and a half years with them, I have seen and done some wonderful things. Things that I am very proud of and will never forget. I have met and have worked with unquestionably, some of the greatest talent on this earth and the pleasure has been all mine.
I feel at this time the decision, as extremely difficult as it was, is what is best for myself and WWE. I wish to continue to grow as a performer and offer those paying hard earned money to watch a show I’m performing on, a little more of myself.
To the male and female locker rooms, coaches and producers, to the production/ring crew, all the way up to the very top of the WWE and most of all the fans... I wish you all the very best and thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything.
It should be noted that requesting his release does not mean it will be granted by the WWE.
Dillinger found his popularity in WWE during his second run in developmental as part of the NXT brand. While often used as an enhancement talent early on, his Perfect 10 character caught on with the fans, which led to a more prominent role there.
Unfortunately, that didn’t carry over to his run on the main roster, where he struggled to get television time throughout his time on SmackDown Live. Last fall he underwent hand surgery and missed time due to that. A victim of creative not having anything for him since he came back, a few weeks ago Tye mentioned that he requested to be sent back to NXT, but was denied that. Feeling trapped & frustrated this was really the only option left for him.
There’s no shortage of places he can continue working his craft, as he indicated he wanted to do in his Twitter statement. Obviously, All Elite Wrestling is what fans will first think of, but there’s also opportunity in New Japan Pro Wresting, Ring of Honor, Impact, and MLW to name a few. Again, that is if WWE grants him his release and doesn’t opt to ride out his contract.
