Wrestling Gold: Night of the Legends
Smoky Mountain Wrestling presents - Night of the Legends
August 5, 1994
Match 1: Doug Furnas vs Killer Kyle
I miss Killer Kyle's earlier hitman persona as what he's doing here isn't as cool. Pretty decent opening match here despite that. Kyle controls most of the match working over Furnas pretty good, but Furnas gets the pinfall with a Frankensteiner.
Match 2: "Cowboy" Bob Orton & Dick Slater vs The Mongolian Stomper & Ronnie Garvin
A battle of the old timers here. All 4 of the men in this match are up there in years, but they can still go. Starts off pretty wild with all 4 men in the ring brawling away before things settle into a tag match. Looks like Stomper is the oldest of the 4 here as he basically doesn't take any bumps in the match. Classic Tag match formula where the Heel team works over one member of the Babyface team (Ronnie Garvin in this case) until he inevitably gets the hot tag. Stomper goes crazy when he gets the tag, and starts hitting Orton and Slater with his boot. The referee rules that both teams DQ'd for some reason after a wild brawl.
Segment: Jim Ross interviews The Gangstaz in the middle of the ring. He mentions the controversy about their recent interviews, and how there's controversy about what he says. New Jack goes on to be even more controversial, and even more incendiary with his statements here. He's a pretty outrageous promo I gotta say.
Match 3: Chris Candido & Brian Lee vs The Rock 'n Roll Express (SMW Tag Team Titles)
Tammy Fytch (Sunny) is handcuffed to Robert Gibson's brother Ricky here to prevent her from getting involved in the match. A whole lot of stalling here. Brian Lee has a little thing where he pokes his finger in the chest of an Officer at ringside, and that's kinda funny. The Rock 'n Roll ultimately get the win here in what tunrs out to be a decent match once they finally get going. Nothing too special, but it's alright.
Following this match is a lengthy segment about the history of wrestling in Knoxville, Tennessee.
There's a Hall of Fame ceremony where they induct several Knoxville Wrestling Legends it goes on for a long time, but it's fun to see, and a great look into a rich wrestling history that might not be known to a lot of younger fans (myself included prior to buying this). I enjoy this segment. It's very touching when Ron Wright presents an award to his old rivals widow.
Following the Hall of Fame ceremony they show the whole buildup to the Heavenly Bodies vs The Thrillseekers feud. The funniest part of all this is when some kids are going to get the autographs of The Thrillseekers and The Bodies jump 'em in a parking lot with Cornette kicking 'em in the ribs, and whacking 'em with a tennis racket. The whole nine yards. This becomes funnier when they interview Cornette and The Bodies about it, and Cornette says "He was trying to pull those guys off of the Thrillseekers" lol.
Match 4: The Thrillseekers vs The Heavenly Bodies
Cornette has told the story that Jericho broke his arm earlier in the day practicing a moonsault for this match, and he's in this match in a cast. Kudos to him for going through with the match as he was surely in pain. The Bodies take advantage, and beat the ever living shit out of Chris Jericho who is drenched in blood. The referee is so concerned for the well being of Jericho that he eventually stops the match. Jericho begs the referee to reverse his decision saying he wants to continue. Eventually the referee allows it to continue and Jericho gets a quick pinfall victory with a roll up. Cornette and The Bodies are of course livid.
Match 5: Dirty White Boy vs Terry Gordy (SMW Heavyweight Championship)
An old school brawling kinda match here. Not much of a match to be honest. You'd think that on a bigger event like this they'd have let it come to a clean finish, but somebody intervenes and leads to Terry Gordy winning by DQ making the match completely forgettable.
After this they show a LONG segment building up the rivalry between Jim Cornette and "Bullet" Bob Armstrong the commissioner of Smoky Mountain Wrestling. Lots of really great stuff came of this rivalry, and this is fun to watch. Don't think I've ever seen a wrestling show so thoroughly recap a rivalry leading into a match as this. The recapping segment here lasts like 25 or 30 minutes.
Match 6: Bob Armstrong, Tracy Smothers & Road Warrior Hawk vs Terry Funk, Dory Funk & Bruiser Bedlam (Coward Waves the Flag match)
Unusual stipulation here. The only way for this match to end is for a designated cornerman for each team to wave the White flag of surrender. Both corners brag coming into the bout that their cornermen is merciless. Cornette says he doesn't care about the health of his men so he ain't waving that flag for nothing. As a counter measure Armstrong's team recruits Ron Wright, one of the meanest heels in the history of Tennessee wrestling. He don't give a damn about nobody, and he ain't stopping the match for nothing lol.
So with that out of the way...here's my comments on the match itself. Cornette's team is working over Tracy Smothers badly early. Smothers is busted open, and they're yelling at Ron Wright to wave the flag. A piledriver is delivered to Smothers on the floor. This is so heinous that even Ron Wright looks concerned, but he's mouthing "No" as Terry Funk screams "Wave the Flag!" ultimately Cornette resorts to some dastardly tactics walking around the ring, and throwing powder in the eyes of Ron Wright, ducking down and waving it from their corner. Ron Wright gets pissed and attacks Cornette. Cornette starts trying to defend himself by swinging the pole with the white flag attached at Wright, and the referee of course sees Cornette waving the flag. Armstrong, Smothers and Hawk get the win!
None of the matches here are Earth shattering or anything, but this is a fun show to watch, and a worthy edition to your collection if you like Classic old school wrestling.
