In the spirit of tournament season (since we're less than a month away from "March Madness") and in the interest of reliving the "glory days" of professional wrestling, I have devised the Ultimate Crockett Cup Tag Team Tournament. For those who have been fans for many years, they will be reminded of the Jim Crockett, Sr., Memorial Cup Tag Team Tournaments that took place in 1986, 1987, and 1988. They featured twenty-four of the "best tag teams in the world," or so they were advertised to. These were single-elimination, bracket style tourneys that saw the top ten teams seeded each year. I have decided to improve upon that format. I am including a total of forty-eight of the greatest teams from several eras in history, all of which will be seeded for this tournament.

I would ask that all of our readers take the time to pass through this tournament and vote on winners for each round. We will begin with round one, which will see all but the top sixteen teams compete. The first sixteen teams have received byes directly into the second round. I will include a PDF bracket at the bottom of this post so that readers may see the pairings and vote accordingly. As I understand that not every fan considers himself a pro wrestling historian, such as I do, I will include a very brief explanation of the teams included in the Ultimate Crockett Cup (listed by seeds):

Match 12: The Dream Team (Flair and Valentine) vs Jimmy and Johnny Valiant - Flair and Valentine vs The Valiants? Don't make me laugh. Flair could handle these punks in a handicap match, with the assistance of Greg Valentine this is a whitewash for The Dream Team.

Match 13: Jumbo Tsuruta and Genichiro Tenryu vs Money Inc. - Tsuruta and Tenryu beat the crap out of Dibease and IRS.

Match 14: The Dudleys vs The Fabulous Ones - Gotta go with the Dudleys

Match 15: Harlem Heat vs The East-West Connection - Jesse Ventura might not have time to bleed, but he'll have time to lose to the superior tag team in Harlem Heat. Booker T and Stevie Ray kick the crap out of these two.

Match 16: Ted Dibease and Steve Williams vs The New Age Outlaws - The New Ages Outlaws take a pounding from the vicious suplexes of Steve Williams, but are able to pull out a victory as Dibease is pretty beaten up from his Money Inc. match earlier. The Outlaws win.

I guess I can go ahead and throw my ring in the hat for voting as well:

Match 1: "The (Midnight) Rockers" vs. The Nasty Boys (The "Nasties" carved out a nice niche' for themselves, but Shawn and Marty were just better)

Match 2: "Holy Demon Army" vs. Jay & Mark Briscoe (As good as the Briscoes are, "HDA" arguably is the greatest tag team in puroresu history)

Match 3: The Von Erich Family vs. "The Moondogs" (I always thought the Von Erichs were overrated, especially in the tag team ranks; "Moondogs" win after a shot with the soupbone on Kevin)

Match 4: "Handsome" Harley Race & Larry "The Ax" Hennig vs. Ben & Mike Sharpe (This would have been a slugfest; Race is the tipping point for me)

Match 5: "The High Flyers" vs. "The Hardy Boyz" (Greg Gagne may be the worst example of nepotism in wrestling history; Hardys easily)

Match 6: Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens vs. "The Fantastics" (Bobby and Tommy were great, but not better than Nick and "The Crippler")

Match 7: "The U.S. Express" vs. "The Sheepherders" (I'm going with talent over brutality in this one; in the first round, Windham and Rotundo are too fresh)

Match 8: "Demolition" vs. Edge & Christian (Edge and Christian were a little overrated in my book; "Demolition" took a copycat gimmick and made it their own)

Match 9: "The Wild Samoans" vs. Ray Stevens & Pat Patterson (Afa and Sika squeak this one out)

Match 10: Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi vs. Ivan & Nikita Koloff (Misawa and Kobashi arguably are the greatest Japanese duo ever {ditto "Holy Demon Army})

Match 11: "The Outsiders" vs. Mr. Fuji & Professor Toru Tanaka (Too much size for Hall and Nash)

Match 12: "The Dream Team" vs. Jimmy & Johnny Valiant (Seriously?! Flair and Valentine might be the most underrated tag team ever! Cakewalk!)

Match 13: "Kakuryu" vs. "Money, Inc." (Very good match; toss-up for me, but I go with the Japs; Jumbo was phenomenal in his prime)

Match 14: "The Dudleyz" vs. "The Fabulous Ones" (I'm going with the upset here; "Fabs" were a tremendous team in their day)

Match 15: Harlem Heat vs. The East-West Connection (Another toss-up; Adrian Adonis was a very underrated talent)

Match 16: Ted DiBiase & Steve "Dr. Death" Williams vs. "The New Age Outlaws" ("Doc" and Teddy all day long; this vote shouldn't even be close)

I didn't know Race and Hennig teamed together, so I had to look that up, and I found this write-up about it, which is why I used the nicknames I did. It's pretty interesting:

TAG TEAMS: HARLEY RACE AND LARRY HENNIG

The mid-60s saw a new team come to the forefront in Verne Gagne's American Wrestling Association--"Handsome" Harley Race and "Pretty Boy" Larry Hennig. The two had met in the Amarillo TX territory in early 1963, and formed an instant bond outside of the ring. Hennig had been an amateur wrestling success in Minnesota in the mid 1950s before joining the professional ranks later in the decade. He had even achieved success in the tag team ranks, winning the AWA World Tag Team title with Duke Hoffman in January of 1962. Race, who had found early success in the Nashville and St Louis territories, was thought of as a young star with a bright future. He was also developing an early reputation as a tough individual, having recovered from a vicious car crash that had taken the life of his pregnant wife Vivian and nearly caused his own leg to be amputated.

The two were put together as a tandem when Race came to the AWA in early 1964, and they immediately clicked as a team. They combined Hennig's mat skills and tough strikes with Race's style of "no wasted motion" along with his aerial abilities. The villainous duo adopted the nicknames of "Handsome" Harley Race and "Pretty Boy" Larry Hennig, due to their arrogant demeanor and blonde hair. The duo set their sights on the AWA's incumbent Tag Team champions and resident superstars--Dick The Bruiser and The Crusher. The Bruiser and The Crusher were each 265 pounds of muscle, stiff offense and the team that crowds across the midwest cheered as anti-heroes. On January 30, 1965, Hennig and Race upended Bruiser and Crusher in Minneapolis to win the AWA World's Tag Team title--ending the pair's nearly year-long reign as champions. Their first reign as World's Champions lasted nearly six months, before losing the titles on July 24th to The Crusher and another of their hated rivals, venerable AWA captain Verne Gagne.

Hennig and Race would re-capture the titles just two weeks later on August 7th, this time holding the titles for nearly a full year. The Crusher and Dick the Bruiser stayed in heated pursuit of the champions, even coming out to one tv taping in women's clothes and with a blonde wig on to mock Race and Hennig. The Crusher nicknamed his arch rivals "the Dolly Sisters", a moniker which got over tremendously with audiences. In interviews, Bruiser and Crusher would berate Hennig and Race for not being able to drink or carouse or brawl--as well as chiding Race for going to get his hair dyed bleach blonde. Male fans soon came to AWA shows dressed in drag to mock Race and Hennig, while wildly in support of Crusher and Bruiser. By the time Crusher and Bruiser finally regained the titles from Hennig and Race on May 28, 1966 in Minneapolis, the feud between the two teams was the hottest angle in the AWA. Race and Hennig soon became a success on the international scale, taking the IWA Tag Team titles--the top prize of Australia's World Championship Wrestling-Australia promotion in early June (the titles would later be held by teams such as the original Blonde Bombers, Swede Hansen and Rip Hawk, as well as by the Texas Outlaws of Dusty Rhodes and Dick Murdoch).

Hennig and Race won the AWA Tag Team titles for a third time on January 6, 1967 from Crusher and Bruiser, again in Minneapolis. They would fend off challenges from the brawling duo as well as from other top teams in the area for the majority of that year (including a match against French Canadian star Rene Goulet and the legendary Lou Thesz on June 24th), until a match on November 1. During the contest against John Powers and Verne Gagne, Hennig had Powers lifted up for a body slam when Gagne hit his knee from behind. Hennig's leg bent inward, tearing several ligaments and tendons in the process. Hennig still refused to go to the hospital in Winnipeg and instead drove back to Minneapolis with Race. The day before Hennig was scheduled to have reconstructive surgery, he left the hospital to suit up for a match in the Amphitheatre in Chicago with Race on November 10th. He came to the ring on crutches and was replaced by Chris Markoff, as Race and Markoff lost the tag team gold to Pat O' Connor and Wilbur Snyder. Hennig had the surgery the next day, and took 18 months off to recover. After the loss of the championships, Race berated AWA chieftain Verne Gagne on television, proclaiming that Gagne had hastily forced Race to choose a substitute for Hennig due to his injury at the hands of Gagne himself. The rash pairing with Markoff was the reason for their championship defeat. Race vowed to take Gagne's AWA World title and challenged Verne throughout the remaining weeks of 1967, but came up empty.

Although Race and Hennig reformed their team upon Larry's return from injury, they soon split up in 1969, with Race returning to singles competition in the NWA. Race would go on to worldwide success as one of the greatest NWA World Champions in history. Hennig soon developed his trademark hard-hitting persona as Larry "The Axe" and continued wrestling in the AWA for nearly 20 more years.
