Today, we're going to take a look back at the 'Big Gold' Platinum Anniversary Tournament that took place over Christmas weekend. As you all know, it was won by former World Champion 'The Beast' Brock Lesnar. We'll take a look at his path to victory in a tournament that was dominated by 'The Richards Collective.' Due to there being eleven total matches, we will join each one in progress as we look at highlights. Without further adieu, let's get started!"
(For the sake of space, commentary between matches will be suspended)
Match One ~ 7 Claudio Castagnoli with Black Widow vs. 10 "Ticking Time Bomb" Jason Justice
Castagnoli controlled much of this match with his strong mat game. He kept the bigger Justice grounded. Justice took several opportunities to fight back, but was overcome each time by Castagnoli's acumen. eventually, Claudio made a mistake that cost him dearly. He had Justice softened up and took a little time to admire his work. Claudio then charged forward, only to be caught in the "Psycho Slam," which sealed his fate.
Winner = Jason Justice by pinfall in 8:12
Match Two ~ 8 "Priest of Punishment" Mikael Judas vs. 9 Shelton Benjamin with Veda Scott
Benjamin was relentless, but Judas is impervious. He eventually won after "El Crucifejo." Some ill-timed interference by Charlie Haas backfired.
Winner = Mikael Judas by pinfall in 9:01
Match Three ~ 6 The Rock with Eve Torres vs. 11 Idol Stevens with Black Widow
The Rock obliterated Stevens, who couldn't get himself out of the gate. The bell rang, Stevens charged, got his with the "Rock Bottom" followed by "The People's Elbow," and that was it.
Winner = The Rock by pinfall in 0:48
Match Four ~ 5 Ricochet with Maryse Ouellet vs. 12 Adrian Neville
This easily was the match of the round. Both men were at their Cruiserweight best, flying around the ring so quickly that fans could barely keep up. This match brought out the oohs and ahs from the crowd. Neville went for the "Red Arrow," but had to roll through when Ricochet moved. Ricochet hit a perfectly time "Enziguiri" when Neville stood up, dropping him in his tracks. Ricochet scaled the ropes and hit his double rotation "Moonsault" for the breathtaking pin.
Winner = Ricochet by pinfall in 9:33
Match Five ~ 2 Adam Cole with Maria Kanellis vs. 10 "Ticking Time Bomb" Jason Justice
This match was almost unfair, due to the fact that Cole was fresh and Justice had previously wrestled. Adam Simply outran and outlasted Jason. The match ended after Justice went for a "Psycho Slam." Cole swung through it and executed a "Bridging O'Connor Roll" for the win.
Winner = Adam Cole by pinfall in 8:23
Match Six ~ 1 "The Beast" Brock Lesnar with Eve Torres vs. 8 "Priest of Punishment" Mikael Judas
This was the most talked about potential second round match when the brackets came out. Both men delivered what was expected--smash mouth, slobber-knocking action. "Suplexes," "Slams," throws, "Clotheslines," chops, and any other clubbing blows that you could think to insert into the discussion, these two used. Ultimately, Lesnar became the first man ever to kick out of "El Crucifejo." Judas kicked out of one "F-5," but then was hit with two others that kept him down. They received a standing ovation after the match.
Winner = Brock Lesnar by pinfall in 9:43
Match Seven ~ 3 CM Punk with AJ Lee vs. 6 The Rock with Eve Torres
This was the first match featuring members of "The Richards Collective" as opponents. For one night, the two reprised their feud from several years ago. The result was different this time around, as Punk elbowed his way out of the "Rock Bottom" and eventually pinned The Rock after "GTS." The weary combatants shook hands after the match and The Rock raised Punk's in victory.
Winner = CM Punk by pinfall in 9:12
Match Eight ~ 4 Kevin Steen with Black Widow vs. 5 Ricochet with Maryse Ouellet
Steen controlled the action, but Ricochet is as tough as nails, and kept coming back. The ending sequence saw Steen hit the "Package Piledriver." He could not get the pin, as the referee was busy breaking up an outside the ring argument between Ouellet and Widow. Ricochet had time to recover as Steen was berating the referee concerning the missed pin. Steen finally got the referee back into the match. He walked over to pick up Ricochet, but was scooped into a "Small Package" for the surprise pinfall. Steen was beside himself after the result. Ricochet's win ensured that a member of "The Richards Collective" was guaranteed to win the tournament, as that group comprised the entire final four.
Winner = Ricochet by pinfall in 8:34
Match Nine ~ 2 Adam Cole with Maria Kanellis vs. 3 CM Punk with AJ Lee
The semi-finals were allotted fifteen-minute time limits. This match needed almost every second of it. Phenomenal match. Both men were on their "A-games." This was as evenly-matched as you can get it. The match flow went back and forth several times. The end came as the clock was winding down. Cole went for the "Last Shot," but Punk reversed it into a "Backslide" that got the pin with two seconds to spare. Both men hugged after the match. Cole raised Punk's hand as Punk whispered something into Cole's ear. Both men nodded after the exchange.
Winner = CM Punk by pinfall in 14:58
Match Ten ~ 1 "The Beast" Brock Lesnar with Eve Torres vs. 5 Ricochet with Maryse Ouellet
Ricochet hung with Lesnar more evenly than many people may have expected. He is the real deal. Lesnar is just too big, too strong, too tough, and too fierce to be denied when he is focused. Ricochet went for a "Flying Body Press," but was caught in mid-air and dropped with a thunderous "F-5" that almost shook the ring. Lesnar helped Ricochet to his feet after the match, where he got a standing ovation.
Winner = Brock Lesnar by pinfall in 12:40
After a fifteen-minute intermission, the fans were on the edges of their seats in anticipation of yet another classic in the rivalry that Brock Lesnar and CM Punk have taken part in over the years. They were not disappointed.
Match Eleven ~ 1 "The Beast" Brock Lesnar with Eve Torres vs. 3 CM Punk with AJ Lee
The finale match in the tournament had a thirty-minute time limit. Both men had agreed before the match that the friendship was off the table once the bell rang. They made good on that commitment, beating the stuffing out of each other. Both men went for pinfalls, with no luck. Punk locked in the "Anaconda Vice," but Lesnar got to the ropes. Lesnar caught Punk in the "Kimura Lock," and likewise, Punk made it to the ropes. Lesnar kicked out of "GTS," and Punk got a foot on the ropes after an "F-5." But, Lesnar dragged him into center ring and once again locked in the "Kimura." Punk writhed, wriggled, and squirmed, but could not make it to the ropes. He would not tap out, but the concern on his wife's face was growing and Lesnar continued to wrench back on the arm. Finally, AJ Lee jumped into the ring and conceded the match on her husband's behalf.
Winner and "Big Gold" Platinum Anniversary Tournament Champion = "The Beast" Brock Lesnar by corner submission in 22:10
Lesnar stood in triumph with the championship belt as officials tended to Punk.
CM was visibly upset and kept asking his wife why she conceded. Eventually, Punk got up and offered his hand to Lesnar, who shook it and raised Punk's hand. Punk continued to nurse the left arm that had been ravaged in the "Kimura Lock" as he left the ring. Confetti began to flow from the rafters as Lesnar stood in triumph with Jordan Richards raising his hand.
